Steps for the Absolute Best Challah French Toast
1. Grab some the challah bread. You should be able to find it at most grocery stores, Buy it whole and slice it yourself into one-inch slices. The thicker the slice, the more custard it can soak in.
Use full-fat dairy for the very best custard. use whole milk, heavy cream, or a combination of the two for creamy custard for your French toast. Add a hearty amount of vanilla extract and a few sprinkles of cinnamon, and a bit of maple syrup, which adds flavor without making it overly sweet. Plus, you’re likely to add more on top.
INGREDIENTS
1 (1-pound) loaf challah bread, cut into 1-inch-thick slices (10 to 12 slices)
1 1/2 cups whole milk, heavy cream, or a combination of the two
6 large eggs
1/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons maple syrup, plus more for serving
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon organic ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
Instructions
Preheat griddle to 350 degrees F or heat a skillet over medium heat.
Add all ingredients If whisking by hand, mix flour and eggs together first, then add remaining ingredients.
Dip bread slices into the batter, dredging them good on both sides, and place on hot, greased griddle or skillet.
Cook for a few minutes, until the bottom of the breads starts looking really golden and brown. Flip and cook on the other side the same.
Remove to a plate. Serve warm with syrup
and a sprinkle of powdered sugar(optional)
